Adopt A Pug

Application & Adoption Information

TEMPORARY HOLD ON NEW APPLICATIONS
(exceptions: seniors or special needs pug)

If you are interested in an adult pug (8yo or older), pug mix or a special needs pug in our care, please email: nana@curlytailpugrescue.org

In these cases only, we will waive the application fee and accept new applications.

NOTE: This is due to a high volume of pre-approved applicants and we do not like our pending adoptive homes waiting more than 1-2 months for a pug.

Thank you for your patience and for choosing to adopt.  It TRULY saves lives!!!!

General Information:

All applications to adopt go through Curly Tail's standard approval process - some of which includes a phone interview, reference checks and home visit.  This process can take from 2-4 weeks for completion.

Our Applications Team will guide you every step of the way and answer any questions you may have.  (Submitting an application to adopt does not guarantee adoption.)

Upon approval of your adoption application, you will be placed on Curly Tail's pre-approved waiting list.   We strive to make the best possible match for our rescued pugs and  our adoptive homes.  While making this match, we have to incorporate many factors when selecting an applicant for adoption.  Some of these factors include simply timing, location, current household pets, work schedules and the like.  We pride ourselves in making great matches (while keeping these factors in mind) and having very happy pugs and adoptive parents!

It costs Curly Tail an average of $450 to bring each dog UTD w/ basic vetting (our adoption fees rarely cover these costs and that does not take into account the intense medical cases we take on a regular basis):
  • Basic Office Visit
  • Spay/Neuter
  • Basic Vaccinations
  • Heartworm Test
  • Fecal Test
  • Giardia Test
  • 2 week Injectible Rx (post op)
  • Basic CBC
  • Deworming (if needed)

Meet Sammie - Owner Surrender

Hi, my name is Sammie and I am an 8 year old male.  I am ready to rescue a human!  I have been in foster care since October (when my owners decided they didn’t have the time for me anymore).  They chose to hit the open road for retirement, and thus I came into Curly Care.

I feel that I must tell you upfront that I have some medical needs which will require a home that is financially able to care for me.  Curly Tail pays for all of Vet expenses (while I am in foster care) and to give you an idea, my Vet care will probably run you about $60 a month - and that’s if no tests are needed to make sure all is well.  However… for this cost… I will provide you with unconditional love and affection, and you simply won’t find a more loyal companion than me!  I take medications for my Cushing Syndrome as well as insulin twice a day after my meals for Diabetes.  I know the routine, so don’t let this scare you - and of course you will be guided every step of the way through my treatment and medical care I require.

If you are still reading this… thank you… I will move on to tell you more about me.

I would do well in any type of household (with other dogs or without).  I would be happier with other dogs but don’t think this is a deal breaker.   If you love me, that is all that truly matters!  I would also do well with older kids, although I get along with everyone.  I would prefer a home where someone works part-time, but I am used to being left alone for 8 hours per day.  However, once you are home, I hope you can spend lots of time with me to make up for being gone earlier.

I am housetrained, however, if you are not looking, I may try to be naughty and mark.  Just keep an eye on me, and I will behave.

I am also very smart, and I knew the layout of my foster mom's house within a few days of arriving, and I have even figured out how to go outside and come back in all by myself.  Smell for me is key, so if you leave me something with your smell on it, I will love you forever!

I am not too much into playing with toys so you won’t have to entertain me much.  However, I do love anything chewy - ears, hoofs, rawhide.  Most of the time you can find me glued to my foster mom's side.  (I am a Velcro Pug!)  And unlike most Pugs, I do not like to be held like a baby or to have my belly rubbed, but I am so happy just sitting next to you watching TV, chewing a bone, or simply, being near you.

I would love to hear more about you and your family and to find out if you can provide me with what I need, so please submit an application and remember to enter the name of “Sammie” as the dog you want to be rescued by.  All my love and kisses… Sammie!!

Meet Nina - Owner Surrender

Hey there!  Are you looking for a cute cuddle Pug?  If so, here I am!  My name is Nina, and I am an owner surrender.  I am a 7 year old female and a whole lotta Pug.  I on a new Curly diet (no people food anymore), so I hope to be fit and trim in no time.

I am housetrained and prefer to eliminate on grass, (it takes me a while to pee, and to be quite honest, I prefer to pee on IVY - I guess I have a green paw!).

I love people of all ages!  I am very gentle with kids who adore me, and my foster mom says I am a “very sweet little girl.”

My foster home has also worked on crate training me (another plus for adopting me)!   During the day I am gated in a family room and I do just fine here.  I also walk well with or without a leash!  My foster mom took me to the beach and took my leash off, and I just stayed walking right next to her.   Don’t let my size fool you… I just love to explore the great outdoors and to poke around outside.

I also have met some furry friends while in foster care, and while I am initially intrigued, I will usually just sit back down.  I am also very empathetic to older or medically needy dogs, simply lying by their side to comfort them.

My foster family is working on getting me used to climbing stairs (not my favorite thing to do), but I have gained enough confidence at this point to do a single step in and out of the house.  Hey, we all have to start somewhere!

My perfect home.. hmmn….well,  I am very easy going, and I don’t play too much, so someone who wants a cuddle Pug would be great for me!  I will however require some exercise to help me to continue on my wellness path, so daily walks would be required!  Also, a patient family, one that would allow me to go at my own pace to relieve myself outdoors is preferred.   I would love to have a home with kids to play with, a fenced in yard would also be great, and another dog or dogs to keep me company would be wonderful.  As far as my parents…. if you work from home, part time, or, are home quite a bit, this would be best for me.

I am truly a bundle of joy and am looking for a forever home that is committed to getting me fit and trim.  I am very mellow, and I just love to be loved. Pug hugs and kisses!

Meet Marley - Owner Surrender

Meet Marley! Marley is a 2 and half year old Puggle who was surrendered to Curly Tail by his owners. Marley is the perfect blend of Pug and Beagle. One minute he will want to snuggle and cuddle (all Pug) and the next he will be at the door howling to go outside (all Beagle). Curly Tail would prefer to place Marley in  a home that has a fenced in backyard because Marley does like being outside so much.

Like some Pugs, Marley has allergies and requires Benadryl on an as-needed basis. Marley also may need lotion applied to his backside near his tail when it gets red due to allergies. He is a very good boy and will take the Benadryl willingly.

Marley is a very sweet boy and is excitable, especially when he meets new people. Doesn't that sound like a typical Pug? He is also very gentle during meal time and will wait patiently at his food dish. Marley's foster mom says that he is very smart and will vocalize when it is "chow" time. Marley does have some guarding issues with his toys, and he will give a growl if he feels that "his" toys are in danger of being taken by another dog. His foster mom is working with him on being a better sharer. Other than that, Marley loves meeting new dogs and of course new people.

Marley would do best in a home where his family is active and like the outdoors. He has a lot of energy, so he would love to have people who would take him on walks (he is very good on a leash) or would let him out to run around his own fenced-in yard. Marley is completely housebroken and prefers to eliminate on grass. When it is time to settle in for the night Marley will sleep either in a crate or in bed with his people. Marley doesn't like being left alone and he may whine or bark for a few minutes to show his displeasure on being left out of all the fun, but he will settle down after a few moments.

Marley is very smart and knows how to give his paw when asked. But...being smart can lead to a bit of mischief. Marley's new forever home needs to know that Marley knows where the food is at all times (what Pug or Beagle doesn't ???) and he can reach the table and grab it!!!!!!

Please consider Marley if you have room in your home and heart for a sweet, loving, intelligent and energetic darling Puggle.

Meet Callie - Owner Surrender
Pending Adoption!

Meet Callie, a 4 year old diva of a Pug. Callie is a Pug who knows what she wants, and that is a ton of love and attention. Callie loves people, but would do best in a home without children or other dogs.

Being the diva she is, she doesn't want any attention to go to anyone except her. Callie isn't the best sharer there is, and why should she share? After all, she is a diva. Callie has a lot of energy and she would prefer a home where her humans either work form home, or are home quite a bit--that way they can dote on her and take her for long walks.

Callie, is housebroken, but being a high-class gal, she chooses to eliminate on grass. Sometimes a diva wants to be left alone, and Callie is fine with being left alone. She finds contentment with chewing on a nylabone or a bone filled with peanut butter. Despite her uptown attitude, Callie like all Pugs, loves to cuddle, and she expects that her humans will cuddle with her and love her unconditionally. Callie is crate trained, but sometimes, when the mood strikes her fancy, she will sleep on her bed. Please contact us if you have the heart and home for this smart, loving, diva of a pug.

Meet Griffen - Owner Surender

Griffen is a young, energetic dog full of personality and love. He is a 3 year old Jack Russell/Pug mix. Griffen came to Curly Tail as an owner surrender.

Griffen has been fostered by our Curly Staff Trainer where he has blossomed into a very good boy who understands all of his basic commands.

Griffen prefers to eliminate on grass.  Griffen has lots of energy and needs a place where he can run around freely and safely.  Griffen does very well on his leash walks.

Griffen loves to meet other dogs, but he gets a bit on the excited side so it's important that he is supervised to make sure that he and his friends are safe.  Socialization is a good thing for Griffen.  Griffen has been doing very well learning not to jump on people - again, he is so happy to meet new people he just can't quite help himself.  So as his new pet parents it is important to keep up the good manners he has learned in Curly Care.  This goes as well for sharing his toys - Griffen thinks he owns everything!

Griffen loves children and playing with all types of dogs. He will take another dog's toys and make them chase him. After a game of chase or tug-of-war, Griffen loves to cuddle up on a human lap and make a nest under the blankets. At night Griffen will fall asleep under the covers of his owner's bed, resting up for a new exciting day!

Griffen is a free-spirited pooch who wants to love and be loved back. Please contact us if you want a dog to run or go on hikes with, & can maintain the manners this eager dog has learned

Meet Roxy - Owner Surrender

Hello, my name is Roxy and I am a 1.5 year old female Puggle.  I am doing very well in foster care, but I am looking for a loving forever home to call my own.  I just love being part of a family and I am well behaved, quiet, and have good manners too!  I sleep in my crate and although I need a little encouragement to go into it, I never complain about it.

Although I am a Puggle, I am really pretty low maintenance, and I just want to cuddle and have you tell me how great I am. (Doesn’t everyone like to be told they are great?!)  My foster family is working very hard to teach me proper housetraining manners, as I do need a bit of help in this area, but I am smart and I am catching on quickly.  I usually will go potty outdoors, and if you provide me with some love, compliments, and a treat, I know I can catch on even faster!

I love to cuddle and to treat you as if you are the only person in the world! (See how special I make people feel??)  I am also very entertaining and I am always making my foster family laugh at the quirky things I do.  I love people of ALL ages!  I am very trusting and love to meet and greet new people.

Did you say “car ride?”  Where are we going?  I love to ride in the car!  Woohoo!  I just want a forever family to call my own, so I hope you will consider adopting me.  I am sure you will love me just as much as my foster family, and it will be wonderful to grow up with you!  If you are interested in me, my adoption fee is $300 money well spent!

Meet Cole - Owner Surrender

Cole is a 7 year old black Puglet who came into Curly Care as a result of an owner surrender. Cole does have seizures, but this does not stop this lil' ball of energy! His seizures are controlled by medication as are his stiff joints.

Cole loves to play with his foster sister (tug, chase, fetch) and to sleep curled up next to her!  Cole also shares his toys very nicely. In addition to these favorite activities, going for walks are great fun. He is described as being the perfect gentleman while on walks, trotting right alongside his foster parents. Cole is completely house trained and gets over being left behind fairly quickly (what Pug wants to be left behind??).  Cole LOVES to eat, what else would one expect from a Pug? It is best to let him eat in solitude, however.  Because of this, Cole would be best in a home with children over 5 years old. He would also thrive in a home with another dog, especially one who loves to play!

Cole will go off and sleep on his own if he feels that things are getting too feisty for him. Cole is lucky to have a foster family with a fenced in yard.  He would love to continue to have this feature in his forever home. Besides walks and playing, Cole is a cuddler.  According to his foster mom, when she is at the computer, Cole is curled up at her feet; when anyone is couch, Cole is right there with his head on their lap. Of course, Cole loves to sleep in his human's bed.  He falls asleep like a baby, either with his pacifier or with another toy in his mouth.

Cole is sensitive to a few things: He doesn't like other dogs jumping on him or really rough play. Even though Cole has a few challenges, his foster parents say that he is one of the best dogs they have ever known. He has an ability to make anyone  smile, from walking around the house with his tounge out to sleeping peacefully next to you. He is as close to a perfect pug as one can hope for and he always is looking to please.

If you are looking for a well-trained, loving, and playful dog with personality, please consider Cole.

Meet Chunk - Owner Surrender
Pending Adoption!

Hi there, I see you are checking me out - who wouldn’t?  My name is Chunk and I am a 3 and a half year old male Pug.  As you can see, I have the face of angel, and my foster mom says I am absolutely adorable and my personality is great!  I am very affectionate, full of energy, and a real sweetheart!

I have found my way into a very nice Curly Tail foster home, whose family is working with me on housetraining and in a few other areas.  I am very gentle during meal time and I do love other furry companions, such as other dogs.  I am a bit hand shy, but this is something my foster family is working on.

As a young stud muffin, I am very high energy, so if love to go on walks, I would LOVE it if you would take me with you!!  I also love water and mud puddles!  Kids however are not my thing, so my forever home should be adult only.

I am a curious little busy-body bugger, who wants to near my favorite person at all times.  I love to rest on the couch cushion behind my foster mom's head.  I am very”protective of my favorite person, and I don’t like anyone to touch him or her.  Thus, again, I have to stress that I would not do well with kids in the house.   I am also working on my social skills, as I tend to be nervous will bark when I meet new people. Because of this my adult only home should have people who will keep up the firm and consistent good work that my foster mom has been teaching me.

I love to stockpile soft toys and cuddle, or hang out on top of the couch, gazing out into the big open world.

I am really a great little guy, and with some training I'm going to make someone very happy.  I am truly a loyal companion, with loads of perky personality and exuberance.

I know that if you are firm and consistent with my training that I can be simply the best, most loyal dog ever!  If I sound like the perfect dog for you, please let me know.  Love, Chunk

Meet Mr. Pugsley - Owner Surrender

Meet Mr. Pugsley, a 7 years young male.  Mr Pugsley is potty trained, loves to meet and greet new people, and adores children.  Mr. Pugsley has gentlemanly manners and will wait patiently for his meals, although he does prefer to eat by himself.  He is also a nutrition nut, who loves his veggies (particularly celery and carrots)!   He is very well trained in other areas as well:  For example, he does “not” jump onto the furniture, and will let his foster mom know that he needs to go outdoors.   He will bark if he needs something but he is very sweet and gentle, and just loves to sit by your feet.

Cuddling or playing with toys isn’t particularly a trait that Mr. Pugsley requires; he is content simply sitting at your feet.  He is low maintenance and perfect for someone who wants a companion who doesn’t require playing hours of fetch.

We asked Mr. Pugsley about his “perfect forever home,” and he responded that he would prefer to have humans who either worked at home or were home quite a bit.  He would also prefer to only have one other dog (preferably a senior) in his adoptive house.

While he doesn’t need to be entertained, he does love human companionship.  Once he has had a morning walk and been fed, he looks forward to relaxing and hanging out.  He has one more requirement…He needs a mid-day walk, and he will tell you if you forget.  After that it is back to doggie patrol - and if you don’t move your feet… he will simply remain right there.

Mr. Pugsley is really a perfect companion who was attached himself to his foster family, and we are confident he will attach himself to yours as well.  Please let us know if you can open your heart and home to Mr. Pugsley, we are sure you won’t be disappointed.

Meet Pumpkin - NYC Shelter Pull

Meet Pumpkin! Pumpkin is a 7 year old female who found her way into Curly Care when we rescued her from an Animal Control Center in NYC.  Pumpkin is adorable, as you can see, but also loveable, and full of energy.  She is also very well housetrained which will make things very easy for her adoptive family!

Pumpkin has limited eyesight, but this doesn’t stop her.  Once she knows the layout of her house she will get along just fine!  She should, however, be carefully watched when outdoors and prefers a fenced in yard.  Because of Pumpkin’s sight impairment (she can see a little), she can be a bit snappy around other dogs, so she would do best in a one dog household.  Although she gets some drops she is really low maintenance and prefers a cuddly human to snuggle up next to.  Pumpkin is quite a comedian too.  Rubbing her tummy is her all time favorite thing, and when you do she will start to snort!  If you're sitting on the couch, Pumpkin will put her front feet on the cushion and walk side to side looking for you to pet her.  She can't see you, so she has to go by feel.  No aggression with people here - Pumpkin loves everyone!  However, a household with children at 7 years of age or older would be best to ensure they understand Pumpkin’s special needs.  Pumpkin isn’t looking for much, just a nice family to call her own, to cuddle her, and, of course, to rub her belly vigorously!!   If you are looking for a sweet, cuddly, furry companion look no further than Miss Pumpkin!

Meet Juno - Owner Surrender

Hi, my name is Juno, and as you can see, I am an adorable two year old Puggle (Pug, Beagle mix), who is “housetrained,” and who loves to meet new people!  No matter what their age, I love them all!  I am very affectionate towards adults as well as children, and I never fuss about having my eyes or ears cleaned.  I am, however, very protective of my humans, so when it comes to other animals in the house, it would be best if I am the only one.   I prefer to be the Queen of the Castle.  I am working on my social skills, so I do have to be watched around other doggies.   For fun I enjoy playing fetch with a ball or squeaky toy and I require lot of exercise.  I would fit best into a home with a family who has time to exercise me and would prefer a fenced in yard.  In addition, if you work from home, or, are home quite a bit, this would be perfect for me!!

Have I mentioned that I am very obedient and well trained?  I understand “sit,” “stay,” “give kisses,” and “no.”  When my foster mom says "no," I roll on my back into a submissive position.  (Don't ya love it??!!)  I am also very agile, and when I get excited I am able to jump about 4 feet into the air! Sign me up for the NBA!  Toys… toys.. did someone say toys?  I will stop at nothing to get a toy that is thrown for me.

I also love to snuggle up at your side on the couch or in bed.   In true Pug fashion, I will do anything for a treat!!   My foster family says, I am a perfecy mix of Pug and Beagle.

At the end of the day I will simply snuggle with you and will get as close to you as possible.  If you have the type of home that I would fit into well, I would love to hear more about you.  Love, Juno

Meet Otis - NYC Shelter Pull

This is Otis! He is a 10 year old pug, with a heart of gold. Otis came to Curly Tail Pug Rescue from a shelter in NYC. It's amazing how much love the most neglected dogs in Curly Care have to give. Otis is a big lover among other things, and he is also very calm and gentle. He is perfect for a wide array of homes.  Otis loves kids, but he would also be a great companion for an older couple or single person who was home a lot. Otis says he would like to have a fenced in yard, but more importantly, a family whom he could love, and give in return for all that love lots and lots of belly rubs! Just because Otis is considered to be a "senior," he still has personality and spunk. Otis loves to climb into any type of bag...backpack, tote, large purse; Otis also LOVES to get into the laundry basket...and who could blame him? It's a nice warm and soft spot, perfect for those long afternoon naps.

Otis is a pretty low-maintenance pooch. He is COMPLETELY house broken and he sleeps in a crate. He is great on a leash and loves going for walks, but sleeping at the feet of a human is also very nice for him. Otis also likes other dogs and even CATS! Otis is receiving ear drops, but no other meds besides his monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Otis is still young at heart, and enjoys playing with plush and plastic toys. Like every other Pug, Otis doesn't like missing out on fun. In the case he can't join the humans or the family in what they are doing, he will whine for a moment, but then quite down.

If you think you can love this young at heart Pug with a heart of gold, please contact Curly Tail Pug Rescue.

Meet Jackie - Owner Surrender

Meet Jackie, a 5 year old male Bug. A what?!? A Bug, a Boston Terrier and Pug mix. Jackie is a confident male who has many Pug characteristics.  He loves to cuddle and snuggle. Jackie is a very well adjusted pooch who is housebroken and prefers to eliminate on grass. Jackie also loves to play and is very good at sharing toys. Jackie loves all types of toys. Another favorite pastime is wrestling with his foster siblings, but it is recommended that this activity be supervised so nobody is hurt during the excitement.  Jackie also loves to chew, chew , chew. He is very good about chewing on appropriate toys.

Jackie walks very well on a leash and loves to meet new people and doggies while out for these walks. After a long day of playing and chewing, Jackie loves to fall asleep on his human's bed. Jackie would do well with children (he does need to learn manners about not jumping on people) and other dogs as well. Jackie's foster mom does say that Jackie is an alpha-male, but that he is not aggressive. Please consider Jackie for your home if you would like an intelligent, well-adjusted, low-maintenance pooch.

Meet Max - Owner Surrender
Pending Adoption!

Meet Max!  Max is a very energetic and playful 1 year old Pug mix who’s looking for a structured yet active home.  Max is healthy, neutered, and up to date on his vaccinations.  His foster mom has been working with him on house training.  He’s making great progress but will still need some reinforcement in his new home.

Max is an alert, energetic, and mischievous little guy with an adorable snaggle tooth overbite. He loves to be outside running around like crazy.  He also thinks it's great fun to steal things around the house and have the humans chase him!  It’s a cute game, but his foster mom has been working with him to learn to “drop it!”  Once Max has used up all his energy running in the yard, playing with his toys, and stealing socks, he’s happy to snuggle up with the humans and chew his nylabone.

Max is a very clever and will definitely try and test the house rules and see what he can get away with.  Max would do best in a household with a strong human leader who could continue to work with him on training.  He likes other dogs and would be fine in a house with another dog as long as there is a strong human to show Max who the pack leader was and doesn’t allow Max to exert his dominance over the other dogs in the household.   Max loves children and would be great in a household with active, slightly older children.  He still jumps a lot and might scare or knock over a very small child.  We would also like to place Max in a home with a fenced in yard so he has space to run.

Max truly has a combination of the Mini-Pin personality and Pug loyalty and love.  A prospective adoptive family should research the Mini-Pin breed to learn more about where he comes from.  He wants to be right on your lap or next to you.  He will get upset if he can see you but not get to you....it is part of his separation anxiety issues that are being worked on while in foster care.  He needs the security from his adoptive family which will in turn give one the ability to train him.  If he is always upset his anxiety builds and it is difficult to manage and train him further.

So structure plus patience, activity, tons of love, affection, and togetherness are all important for his success. The wrong type of structure will not help set Max up for success.  The wrong type of structure would be: not allowed on the couch, "don't sit on my lap," "get out of that room," having him sleep in a different location or locked up at night - this would not work at all for him!!!!  He needs the reassurance, love, and consistency in his training for it to be successful.  He is very young and smart.  With the right combo, Max will be a happy and loving companion!

Max is an adorable little guy who will make a very loyal fun loving companion who will bring you tons of laughs!

Meet Mr. Pugsley a.k.a Sweet P - Shelter Pull

This gentle sweet boy came to us through Pug-Peke-Tzu Angels Rescue. Sweet P is a happy boy and loves to zip around in his wheel cart....which was made especially for him when he was in PPTR's care.

Sweet P was originally brought to the shelter to be put down because he couldn't use his back legs any longer.
He was rescued by loving people at PPTR because after 10 years of being the perfect pug, they felt this just wasn't fair. We couldn't agree more!!!

Curly Tail offered to help out & found him a new foster home where he is the only foster to be showered with love and attention.

He loves to hang out in the quiet of his foster mom's art studio all day.

Both Sweet P and his foster Mom & Dad couldn't be happier. This smiling boy will remain in Curly Care until he finds a home.
