Curly Pugs of Summer - Update 8/26/10 Carly and Mugsy are Pugs #38 and #39 on our intake list since June 1st ALONE. Thank you to our loyal followers! As we continue to say "yes" to Pugs who need us and stretch our resources we lean on your generous donations more than ever! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Late on Friday night Curly Tail received a frantic email from a woman who had just purchased two Pugs off of Craigslist. As she put it, she and her family had been "taken on a very expensive ride." They had replied to an ad stating that the owner of two Pugs had no place to live and needed to find a place for her two pugs immediately or else she was going to leave them behind. The well intentioned purchaser received very misleading photos of Mugsy and Carly. The Craigslist seller and met her family with Carly and Mugsy in a parking lot. It was explained to us that "once she (the seller) got our money, she jumped in her car and took off." The
distraught email we received said this pair had to be moved
immediately because the new owner could clearly see they were in
desperate need for major medical care and this was not what she was
expecting. She was hoping to purchase 2 healthy pugs and was in for the
shock of her life.
This is a classic example of the dangers of purchasing pets from Craigslist! Ads are misleading and you simply never know whom you are really dealing with! In addition to Carly's "skin issues" (at the time thought to be mange), both dogs had "crust and green goo" coming out of their eyes and it was suspected that Carly recently had a litter of puppies. Both were infested with fleas and their nails were so long they couldn't walk properly. We
were able to comply with the very difficult 24 hr deadline that was
set. We
arranged for immediate intake, transport and secure foster care. We're
happy to report
that Mugsy and Carly have made it into Curly Care! They are in bad
shape but they are safe and treatment began for the various medical
within 24 hrs of intake. We have already spent almost $1700 in their
care & we have not completed the surgeries yet.
Carly: 3 year old Carly was sadly in far worse shape than Mugsy. We are pleased that she does not have mange however, what was described as "sensitive skin" is actually a very serious skin issue. This is the result of long time neglect & horrific living conditions. Carly's skin is literally peeling off with infection. She is covered in open sores & oozing wounds from infection. She has elephant skin covering her ears, stomach and limbs. Her whole body is swelled from inflammation and her ears & eyes are oozing with infection as well. ![]() Curly Tail has already brought her to our Vet, and her condition was so poor that it would have been to dangerous to spay at that appointment. After a skin scrape, blood work and other diagnostics, (on top of the basic vetting & vaccinations which she was overdue for), Carly was sent home home with antibiotics, medicated shampoos, and topical ointment to treat her skin and begin the healing process. Both dog still need to be altered & are not able to go in for surgery in their present condition. Mugsy too will need basic vetting including rabies and distemper vaccines as well as heart worm and fecal tests. He also has several growths on his body which will need to be removed and biopsied. Mugsy - The 1st image is a picture of mugsy that the purchaser was sent. The 2nd picture below was Mugsey at actual drop off.

There are many. For those who cannot give of their time or home, donations are always greatly appreciated. We can't always predict the exact needs of all of our cases. That is why we have individual Chip In Campaigns for the extreme cases we take on. What we can't forget are our pugs that come in daily from homes that are no longer able to care for them and most likely haven't for some time. These pugs need to be fully vetted and even with rescue discounts, getting a pug fully UTD in NYC or Boston is quite costly. We average an intake of about 4-8 pugs per month. Some of the vetting needs may vary from basic vaccinations to full blown medical care. If we get an average of 5 pugs per month fully vetted (which costs approx. $425 each pug), we average $2125 per month in basic vetting alone. These #s do not include other foster care supplies such as the Curly Diet we provide our foster homes with, Belly Bands, Crates, Bedding, Flea & Tick medication, Transport & other needs just to keep the dogs in our care & keep our organization running. We decided to create a Chip In for these puglets....they are our Curly Pugs of Summer. They are the ones that have come into our care recently and the ones on our waiting list and the ones yet to come but surely will over the next few months. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR REGULAR & NEW SUPPORTERS.....WE CAN'T DO IT ALONE! UPDATE 8/2/10 This
week we're featuring 9 year old Jake, a burly, lovebug of a Pug. Jake
was surrendered to Curly Tail because his owners could no longer afford
to care for him. After a few days in Curly Care, Jake's foster mom noticed a green discharge coming out of his nose, yellow discharge coming out of his rear, and a rust/dark
colored discharge coming out of his penis. When it was confirmed that
Jake was straining to pee and his urine was a dark color, we rushed him
to our Vet. ![]() Jake required a series of diagnostic tests to uncover the cause of his symptoms. These included a X-rays,
blood work, as well as a physical exam, which cost Curly Tail about
$250. The diagnostics revealed that Jake had bladder stones and needed
surgery immediately. The estimate for Jake's surgery was approximately
$1,200. Jake's condition
was critical, as the stones had travelled into his uretha – a life
threatening condition. If left untreated, the stones would have caused
complete blockage. His
foster family came to his rescue by transporting Jake twice to Curly's
Vet - that's a total of 6 hours of driving! First Dr. Solomon flushed the stones from his urethra back into his bladder and shortly after Jake had his ER operation to remove them from his bladder. As
you know from previous Curly Pugs of Summer posts, we are managing
multiple high cost medical cases, (more can be found on our adoptable
page). Jake's surgery was not one we had accounted for prior to his
intake, as it was our impression that Jake had no health issues. This
intake alone has increased our Curly Pugs of Summer estimated budget by
at least $2,000 after we factor in diagnostics, surgery, follow ups, and
all medications/aftercare.
Curly Pugs of Summer - UPDATE 7/24/10 It’s hard to believe - but our summer intake count has grown to 25 – and the surrender inquiries keep coming!!!!!! This week we’re featuring a lovely pair of six year old Puggy ladies, Stella and Harriet. Curly Tail was contacted by a woman who had agreed to take them in temporarily, while their owner relocated. Sadly, Stella and Harriet’s owner disappeared. A few days turned into a month – and Stella and Harriet’s owner could not be reached. We received a desperate call about Stella and Harriet – that they had to be placed in foster care within 24 hours. Our “all-call” was successful – (thank you Curly volunteers!!!) – and we were able to secure transport AND a foster home that could accommodate a pair, which is often not easy to do. Upon their arrival, it was clear that these two gals had not been well cared for. They were extremely overweight and their nails were so long that they could not walk properly. We took them
right to our Vet. to be spayed and given a much needed check up. (Records were impossible to retrieve
from the owners who abandoned them).
Stella had a urinary tract infection; an allergy issue on her face and neck that looked like pimples; and a low grade ear infection. She was sent home with antibiotics for her skin and ears; Clavamox for her UTI; and ear flush and Baytril drops for her ear infection. She was also sent home with special shampoo to be bathed in every 7-10 days until her skin condition improves, and skin wipes to be used on the most affected areas. Just to be safe, Stella had a skin scrape – which we’re happy to report was negative. Harriet had a full dental and two teeth were removed. She had an ear infection and was sent home with antibiotics for her ear and mouth, as well as Tresaderm for her ears. She too had a skin scrape – which was negative. These little ladies are resting up in foster care and we’re happy to report that they’re feeling MUCH more comfortable now that they’re many untreated health issues were addressed. They're even hanging out by the pool! They will both need follow-ups to check their ears and remove their sutures. Once again we want
to thank all of our wonderful supporters and volunteers. In recent weeks, so many of you have
stepped up and offered homes, cars, and even hours of your time so that Curly
Tail can say “yes” when we are contacted about a Pug who needs help. Thank you! We can’t do it alone!
Curly Pugs of Summer - UPDATE 7/16/10
We’re happy to report that Frankie’s time at CVC – a total of EIGHT days
of around the clock pain management and hourly applications of eye meds
– was a success! Frankie did not have to have his eye removed!
Once in stable condition, Frankie was then neutered and also had a dental – during which ten teeth were extracted due to extreme dental disease. Now pain free, Frankie is safely at his foster home and loving life in Curly Care! Your
contributions make it possible for Curly Tail to provide the extensive
and costly medical care needed by so many Puglets. THANK YOU FOR YOUR
ONGOING SUPPORT!
UPDATE 7/9/10
June
and July have been VERY busy months for Curly Tail! We have taken in a
record number of 15 Pugs over the course of 6 weeks - and STILL have a
wait list of Pugs-in-need! Our expenses have far exceeded the budget we
had anticipated.
In this
update we're featuring a 5 month old Pug puppy named Henry who was
surrendered into Curly Care after being found as a stray wearing a
collar that was so tight it had to be cut off by the Vet.
Henry
needed to be neutered and given a full round of vaccinations plus a
heart worm and fecal test. We're working to raise the funds necessary
to cover Henry's medical care.
THANK YOU
to all of Curly Tail's supporters who help us provide love and
excellent medical care to the Puglets like Henry who so desperately need
us! |
