Baby Otys, another Sophia?!

Otys Update - Calling all Angels

posted Sep 5, 2012, 10:10 AM by Lori Swett   [ updated Sep 5, 2012, 10:13 AM ]

Otys
was brought to NYC to be seen by our Curly Tail vets, was admitted into Intensive Care with severe sepsis, and after three days, released to his foster mom's care.
Poor Otys was emaciated, with open areas on his useless foot. His foster mom has literally brought him back from the brink of death.

Otys's diet is still being tweaked but he is currently stable again. He has gained a little weight, and is on a regular schedule of feeding and toileting. Because Otys is partially paralyzed he needs to have his bladder manually expressed 3 times per day. Otys wears a belly band to prevent accidents in between his bladder expressions.

While we are pleased that Otys's foot is healing, he will need an amputation surgery in the near future to prevent another life threatening infection.

In many ways, Otys is similar to our Curly mascot, Sophia, with the amount of care needed.

Otys is still a young puppy, and despite the unfortunate cards he has been dealt, we believe he still has a lot of life to live, and a lot of love to give one very special family.

We firmly believe the best thing for Otys is to stop being moved around in various foster homes, and be placed in a warm, loving, permanent forever home that is committed to his special care.  Once you get his routine down, Otys's special care is truly manageable.

Simply put, Otys needs an Angel on Earth to adopt him. Someone who will take care of him and love him, for the sweet, special soul that he is.
Could it be you? It may well be the most rewarding thing you do in this lifetime, and the love you would gain in return would be immeasurable.

Please take a moment to visit Otys Bio.

The following is a breakdown of Otys's medical expenses:

NYC CVC 3 day hospital visit - $3066.90
Emergency vet in CT  - $626
2 vet visits in CT - $105
Supplies and food - $383
Leg amputation - $2559

Otys - Calling All Angels

Otys was originally fostered in CT, but within a week, started refusing food and water, urinating blood and clots, and was rushed to the Emergency vet in CT. They found a raging urinary tract infection, to the point that Otys was unable to pass urine.

Otys was immediately moved to NYC to be seen by our Curly Tail vets, was admitted into  Intensive Care.

Poor Otys's heart rate dropped to 60. His gums were gray, he had shallow breathing, his saliva turned thick like glue and we thought we were losing him. We honestly did not think he would survive the night.

At the CVC, Otys was given fluids and oxygen which bought us a couple hours to run tests. A catheter was used to help drain urine and see if his kidneys were able to produce new urine on their own.

The tests revealed Otys was septic and toxins were backing into his kidneys, which began to fail.

At this point the doctors were trying to reverse renal failure. IV fluids and medications bought us more time.

Otys spent one night in ICU and the next 2 days were overnight care without Oxygen and IV's only.

After three days,  Otys was released to his foster mom's care.

Otys was emaciated, with open areas on his useless foot. His foster mom has brought him back from the brink of death.

He has since gained a little weight, and is on a schedule of feeding and toileting. The one thing we know about Otys is he is a fighter, a sweet and affectionate boy who deserves us to not give up on him.

We won't give up, if he won't give up.
Otys's medical bills from his two ER trips have cost $6,740 to date.

Otys has a critical set back!

Unfortunately, Otys had a more urgent set back this week when he started urinating straight blood and refused food and water.  We know any dog refusing food, especially a pug, is not in good form at all.

We sent Otys to the ER in CT.  There he was tested for a number of possible causes.  We know he has a raging UTI but we are waiting to hear about possible additional or underlying causes.

We have set up a Chip In for his growing medical expenses.  His initial trips to the ER were over $800 in expenses.
Please considering helping Baby Otys!! THANK YOU!!

Baby Otys comes to Curly

Baby Otys

Baby Otys is a one year old pug surrendered to us because his owner could no longer care for him.  She was either going to give Otys to Curly Tail or have him PTS.  Of course the people at Curly Tail decided to give it a shot and help Otys even though we had little information at the time.

What we do know is that one of Otys' back legs is paralyzed but we aren't sure of "why".  We are working with our Curly vets to determine if there is anything we can do to help his situation.
